Endorphins Make You Happy

This blog has seriously been neglected. I have a lot of things going on (per usual) and I need to make a sincere effort to keep up with this. Why? I love to write and I don’t get to do enough of it at my full-time job. Blogging is definitely a “hobby” and it keeps me balanced and sane.

Yesterday I had an overall blah day and felt miserable/stressed for numerous reasons. Instead of just going home after work and crawling into bed for the rest of the night I decided to do one of my favorite things: run. I threw on my Nike Frees and headed out. I usually don’t run with headphones but last night all I wanted to do was listen to some good tunes and zone out. I didn’t have a route planned out or agenda for pace, etc. However, from the first step out the door I felt instantly awesome. Last night was absolutely perfect out, ideal fall running weather. I ran over to the Charles River and ran along the Esplanade which is my favorite place to run. Like I said before, I felt awesome and ended up running 5.3 miles at an average pace of 7:30. The views of the city at dusk are unreal and sometimes I don’t appreciate Boston enough. It was exactly what I needed and my endorphins were on complete overdrive, therefore putting a big smile on my face.

Mile Time Change Avg Pace
1
8:03 8’03″/mi
2
*Fastest
15:20 - 0:46 (9%) 7’17″/mi
3
22:49 + 0:12 (-3%) 7’29″/mi
4
30:24 + 0:06 (-2%) 7’35″/mi
5
37:45 - 0:14 (3%) 7’21″/mi

I am so glad I decided to just get out and run. My mood did a complete 180 and I felt like 95% of my stress I was feeling 40 minutes prior had totally dissipated plus I don’t think I have ever run that fast during a regular (non-race) run.  Overall I realized sometimes its good to just get out and zone out and do something good for your body and your brain. There isn’t any use in sitting around and moping. Go out and do something about it whether it’s a great run, a walk, a yoga class, a few drinks with friends…whatever!

What do you do to relieve stress? What is your go to “get happy quick” solution?
